So as some of you might be able to tell, my 30/30 is really behind. Today is the 23rd and I have yet to produce even 10 poems.
I’m feeling a little guilty about this, and I’m informing you of such as a part of my 30/30.
I have been feeling that this exercise is less about producing great work…
I think that going through periods of silence is natural and healthy (insert masturbation joke here). That’s why I am skeptical of things like 30/30 or National Novel Writing Month, and why I imagine it must be so stressful to be a professional writer. My point, however, is that talking (or writing, or composing) too much can break your mind away from reality. Silence is golden because we must take time to listen; not only to what other people have to say, but to silence itself. Silence is real and beautiful.
You cannot even do poetry—you cannot have anything great to write about—if you do not first shut up and pay attention. So may I humbly suggest: rather than distract yourself with worry, when you cannot find words, rather allow your words to get lost for a while. They will come back when you are ready for them.
Once upon a time somebody told me I ought to quit yearning. I was dumb enough to believe him, but I was also too dumb to follow the advice. The end.
